Award for Tsunami Work

The Heart Circle Sangha today announced that its
founder and teacher Rev. Joan Hogetsu Hoeberichts,
Sensei, and Charika Marasinghe, founder of Sarvodaya
Legal Services, together received the Women and
Engaged Buddhism Award at the "Women Being the
Dharma" Conference. The award is in recognition of
their work in the Sri Lankan-based Psycho-Spiritual
Healing Program. This work involves senior American
therapists training a team of Sri Lankan Counselors
to conduct grief and trauma counseling with emphasis
on spiritual aspects.
The award of $1,000, made by the Buddhist Council of the MidWest, is the third annual award to women providing leadership in the world through engaged Buddhism. This grant also recognizes all those others involved in the project, the community and therapists of Heart Circle Sangha, and the administrators, the dedicated counselors and the translators of Sarvodaya. The grant will go to the children's program of the Psycho-Spiritual Healing Program.
About the Psycho-Spiritual Healing Program: The objective of the project is a collaborative effort to train Sri Lankan counselors and to leave in Sri Lanka a cadre of skilled clinicians. The workshops teach skills of deep listening, empathy, the healing power of connection, and highlights the interdependence of all beings. The project emphasizes counseling skills that empower clients.
About the Buddhist Council of the Midwest: Promoting the spread of the Dharma by fostering the learning and practice of Buddhism in America, the Buddhist Council of the Midwest (BCM) includes of all three Buddhist traditions: Theravada, Vajrayana and Mahayana.
